Should I apply to an imperfect match, and how do I follow up?

Who this helps: Anyone about to apply, or waiting to hear back.

The short answer

Apply when you meet most of the required items and nothing legally required is missing; preferred items rarely decide things alone. Apply through the employer's stated route with a few tailored lines in the body of the email or form. Ask for the timeline at each stage, and follow up once, politely, after it passes.

Is an imperfect match worth applying to?

Our recommendation

A quick way to decide

  • You meet most required items and some preferred ones

    Our suggestion
    Apply.
  • You are slightly short on years but did comparable work

    Our suggestion
Apply, and make the comparable scope obvious in the first lines.
  • You miss a licence or registration the job legally needs

    Our suggestion
Don't apply yet; start the licensing route.
  • Native-level Hebrew is required and you don't have it

    Our suggestion
Usually skip, unless you know the team works in English.
  • You meet only the preferred items

    Our suggestion
Skip; look for the version of this role one level down or in an adjacent field.

Use the employer's stated process

Our recommendation
  • Apply through the link or address the listing gives. If a job appears on several sites, use the employer's own page.
  • Follow any instructions exactly: a reference number in the subject line, a Hebrew CV, a portfolio link.
  • Don't send the same CV to the same company through several channels at once. Recruiters notice, and a referral works best when it is the only route.

The application message

What sources report
  • Put it in the body of the email or the form, not in a separate attachment: AllJobs and Tel Aviv University's career centre both advise this[2][3].
  • Keep it short: Nefesh B'Nefesh suggests 3–5 sentences[4]; AllJobs and TAU say no more than half a page[2][3].
  • Not every recruiter reads it: one Tel Aviv agency recruiter calls it often unnecessary, but useful when the fit is very close[5].
  • Nefesh B'Nefesh reports that olim have found a Hebrew cover note brings more replies, because most HR staff are Hebrew speakers[4]. That is reported experience, not data.
Example
Example application message
Subject: Data Analyst – ref. 4417 – Rachel Cohen Hello, I'm applying for the Data Analyst role (ref. 4417). For the last four years I built weekly sales and inventory reports in SQL and Power BI for a 30-store retail chain, which matches the reporting and SQL requirements in your listing. I live in Petah Tikva and can start immediately. My English is native and my Hebrew is conversational. My CV is attached. Thank you, Rachel Cohen, 050-0000000

Following up

What sources report

What different sources advise

  • Nefesh B'Nefesh

    Advice
After emailing a CV, find a phone number and call, because emails get missed[4].
  • AllJobs

    Advice
Ask about the timeline in the interview; contact them only after it passes, never the same day; repeated calls work against you[6].
  • Tel Aviv University career centre

    Advice
If the date you were given passes, a short polite reminder is fine[7].
  • Jolt (hi-tech training firm)

    Advice
If there's no response about a week after a phone screen, follow up[8].
Our recommendation

Our default, which you should adjust to the situation:

  • At every stage, ask: "What are the next steps, and when should I expect to hear?"
  • If you were given a date, wait until it passes, then send one short email.
  • If you applied cold and heard nothing, one short email after 7–10 working days is reasonable. A second, a week or two later, is the limit.
  • Follow up sooner if you have another offer with a deadline. Say so plainly and politely.
  • If someone referred you, it is fine to ask them once whether the CV reached the right person.
Example
Example follow-up email
Hello Noa, thank you again for the interview on Tuesday the 3rd. You mentioned you hoped to decide on next steps by the end of last week, so I wanted to check whether there's any update. I'm still very interested in the role. Best regards, Rachel
